Disappearing Book No. 1

2010

I found a large dead bug in the kitchen near the patio door last week. It must have been dead for a while because it was so light but I don’t know how it got there. Anyway, it was one of those “American Beauty” moments in which I looked at it for a long time and marveled at its many moving parts. Then I simply opened the patio door and swept it outside. And I thought to myself that is exactly how I’d like to go. Just being thrown outdoors somewhere and then walked away from without another thought. I always liked what Mark Twain said: The best thing you can do for the dead is to forget them.
